Understanding of Acids and Bases

It is a very important lesson regarding chemical sciences which definitely would do a fun at home science experiment for kids. This experiment demonstrates the science of neutralization of an acid by a base with the formation of salt and water. This experiment is simple, and the chemicals involved are safe and easy to work with. But for the sake of protocol, one can teach the kids to use proper safety gear.

Ingredients: Indicator, cabbage juice (due to the presence of anthocyanin pigment), common kitchen substances such as sugar, lemon juice, soda, and water for the measuring of pH scale.

Instructions:

Option One

  1. Take two or three leaves of red cabbage and add 1 cup of water for each leaf; put the lid on the blender.
  2. Blend it for 30 sec.
  3. Now put the cabbage juice (leave the pieces of cabbage out) in a large container OR put the cabbage juice in several different test tubes

Option Two

  1. Take two or three leaves of cabbage and add 1 cup of water for each leaf; put the cabbage into a pot after coarsely cutting them up.
  2. Cook on medium heat for around 15 minutes
  3. Strain the cabbage, leaving only the liquid
  4. Now put the cabbage juice in a large container OR put the cabbage juice in several different test tubes

 

Procedure:

  1. Now that the indicator is ready, the prediction of substances could be easier, whether it is acid, base, or neutral.
  2. Take the ingredients such a lemon, kiwi, oranges, sugar, salt, soda, etc.
  3. To differentiate between them, make a table and add to the respective heading under acid, base, or neutral.

Results

  1. After you add the substance/ ingredient one by one, you can see the change of colour in the container/test tubes.
  2. If the substance is acid, it turns red or pink.
  3. The base would be turned light blue or green.
  4. If no change in colour happens, the substance is neutral.
  5. Clean the place after all your process has been completed.

Repel Glitter experiment

This is my favourite and the simplest for an at home science experiments for kids, and it’s pretty cool!

In this simple experiment, you will be teaching your child about water tension and how washing your hands gets rid of germs.

Items you will need

  • Blue Dish Soap
  • Glittertry pepper if you don’t have glitter
  • Water
  • A shallow dish

Instructions:

  1. Pour water in the shallow dish almost all the way to the top
  2. Sprinkle the glitter on the surface of the water
  3. Drip some soap into the water OR coat your child’s finger with soap then ask them to dip it in the middle of the sprinkles of glitter

Tip: try coating the tip of a toothpick with the soap!

Results

Once the soap has been dropped into the water, with either one of the options above, the soap will suddenly start to move away from your finger/the soap. Like magic! (it’s actually laws of physics…shocking right?)

Explanation:

When the soap hits the water it breaks the surface tension in the area in which the soap was dropped in. But the water tries to keep the surface tension by moving away from the soap, bringing the glitter with it.

For children: Explain that this is how it works when you are washing your hands, replacing glitter with germs.

For example, the water tries to keep the surface tension by moving away from the soap, bringing the germs with it. You may also explain that the glitter is like the germs we can’t see, which is why it’s important to wash our hands.

– I mean glitter is literally like germs, it gets literally everywhere and needs extensive cleaning to get rid of if you spill it or if those kiddy grabby hands get ahold of the couch.

Tip: if possible, do this experiment outside if you decide to use glitter to avoid having to spend months sparkling like a star.

Ice Milk Experiment

A fun process is leading to the understanding of children towards colours and their composition with water and milk.

Procedure:

First of all, colour the food colours of different shades make the experiment more interesting. Add the food colour to the ice cube plate one by one and mix it with a little amount of milk. After this, repeat this process, now mix the colour with the water instead of the milk. Freeze both the ice plates. Ask your children why the ice cubes with milk have lighter colours as compared to the water ones.

Answer: As the milk is added to the food colouring, it lightens the colour, whereas water doesn’t change its colour.


Primary Color Mixing

It is a fun experiment for the understanding of primary colour mixing. It helps to quickly understand the combinations of the colour through a fun and easy process.

What is a primary colour? The primary colours are red, yellow, and blue.

Procedure

  1. Take a cup filled with water, add yellow colour and now mix it. When it is thoroughly mixed, add blue colour and see what colours come out as a result.
  2. Now repeat this process and observe the different colours formed as a result.

Tip: Keep a colour chart on hand, Preferably one that includes the combinations and what colour they create. You can easily create one yourself using a piece of paper and dotting the colours on it.


Clean Old Coins

Cleaning old coins and bringing them to use is a fun activity to do and teaches an important lesson about productivity. In this basic chemical experiment, use ordinary home products to clean and shine old rusted coins. Ask children to forecast which will perform best and broaden their knowledge by researching the outcomes.


Blowing up Balloons

This could be another easy science experiment for kids about chemical reactions. You most likely performed simple scientific experiments like this while you were in school. This activity shows the interactions of acids and bases.

Instructions:

  1. Fill a bottle halfway with vinegar and a balloon halfway with baking soda.
  2. Attach the mouth of the balloon to the bottle opening, make sure to not spill any of the baking soda into the bottle just yet.
  3. When you and your kids are ready; swirl the baking soda into the bottle, and watch it inflate.

Tip: Secure the mouth of the balloon to the bottle opening with a rubber band or something similar.


Learning About Transpiration
